My bloggy friends… I want to know what YOU are reading this month? You are smart and crazy and interesting, so I want to know what you recommend! Please share book title and author in the comments.
I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
Dr. Seuss
I can read in red. I can read in blue.
I can read in pickle color too.
I can read in bed, and in purple. and in brown.
I can read in a circle and upside down!
I can read with my left eye. I can read with my right.
I can read Mississippi with my eyes shut tight!
There are so many things you can learn about.
But…you’ll miss the best things
If you keep your eyes shut.
The more that you read, the more things you will know
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
If you read with your eyes shut you’re likely to find
That the place where you’re going is far, far behind
SO…that’s why I tell you to keep your eyes wide.
Keep them wide open…at least on one side.

In preparation for our next trip to Ethiopia, our whole team is reading two books: "Foreign to Familiar" and "When Helping Hurts: Alleviating Poverty Without Harming the Poor." I recommend "Foreign to Familiar" to anyone who is traveling out-of-country, or who is doing an international adoption–so helpful, and also a quick/easy read! "When Helping Hurts" is a must-read for anyone who is interested in missions or international aid work.

Just finished reading "Same Kind of Different as Me" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore – great story woven about a wealthy art dealer from Fort Worth and a homeless man from Louisiana. It touches on race, poverty, and God's power to heal…and sometimes not heal.
Just started reading "Hello, I Love You: Adventures in Adoptive Fatherhood" written by Ted Kluck. Written about a family who adopts two boys from Ukraine. Unique in that it's written from the Dad's point of view. Very well written, very funny!

Well, I FINALLY finished "So Long Insecurity, by Beth Moore." Now I've just begun a book called "Dewey." It's a true story about a cat that was left in a book return slot at a library and how this cat ends up affecting the whole town. (I borrowed it from my daughter. :)

Hey, one of my readers told me she's reading your blog! So I figured I had to come on over. She also said you're giving away a mission trip, which doesn't sound like a typical gift. So does leaving a comment enter me into the contest?

Wow, my to-read list is so long I don't know if I'll ever get to all of it! Right now I'm just reading some "fluffy" fiction to give my mind a break, but some of the books on my list are Parenting with Love and Logic, When Helping Hurts, Hunger for God by John Piper, Learning to Live Financially Free by Curt and Marybeth Whalen, A Heart Ablaze by John Bevere, and Your Girl by Vicki Courtney. Wish I had more time to read!

Well, I second all the positive comments about David Platt and Francis Chan's books – they are life changing. Currently, I've changed course a little and I'm reading Made To Crave by Lysa TerKeurst. It's a Bible study on craving God instead of food (or whatever else is your "go-to" thing besides God). It's really good and has really changed my perspective on this weight loss issue I've been dealing with all my life. If you've tried everything else to curb your cravings and it doesn't work – try this.

Am LOVING One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Also, When Helping Hurts is rocking my world…it’s a practical look into how well-meaning people giving aid isn’t always what’s best. It’s giving me a great understanding of how to provide lasting help to people in need that ultimately empowers the people…making them self-sustaining rather than relying upon others for help. Great stuff!!!

Hole in the gospel and three cups of tea. Both great.

Having just returned from our Adoption trip to China – I am devouring everything I can find about China. I have come across some mind-bending books written about why so many Chinese mommas have no choice but to give up their baby girls! This has been a great resource for putting together the puzzle pieces of our new daughter's first few weeks of life and coming to grips with her abandonment story.

I am ready Crazy Love by Francis Chan for the second time. LOVE THAT BOOK!
April 5th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
I am reading Mountains Beyond Mountains–not Christian, but I have learned a lot about Haiti, tuberculosis & AIDS, and global health in general. Other books I'd recommend to this group: Too Small to Ignore (Stafford), Following Jesus Through the Eye of the Needle (Annan)–also about Haiti, and Dorie–the Girl Nobody Loved (VanStone). I reallllllly want to read Radical and so many of the books mentioned. Couldn't we have an alternate life dedicated to just reading?
