I am so honored that God would allow our family to adopt a beautiful girl from Ethiopia to call our own. The Girl Effect Video is a powerful tool to spread the word on making a difference in a child’s life.
The Girl Effect: The powerful social and economic change brought about when girls have the opportunity to participate in their society. WHY GIRLS?
Because when adolescent girls in the developing world have a chance, they can be the most powerful force of change for themselves, their families, communities and nations.
But while those 600 million girls are the most likely agents of change, they are invisible to their societies and the world.
So what can you do about that? Get yourself seen, whether you’re a girl or just believe in girls.

Many months ago I posted a few pics of Zoie having her “first” temper tantrums. I’m the mom of 3, so I’ve had lots of practice dealing with these crazy, hair-raising episodes. Zoie is now 22 months old and has started perfecting her tantrums. She has her screaming fits down to the tee when she hears the word no, but really wants to hear yes. She started in the past few days, throwing her chubby body down in the middle of Target, but eases her back and head in slow motion so she won’t hurt her self. Temper Tantrums are no funny business. It’s been a long time since my 2 oldest have thrown a tizzy over a broken crayon or juice not being poured fast enough. Hubby and I work hard on remaining calm and refocusing the bursts of rage to something fun or interesting.
I have to admit, the temper training all comes back (slowly, hey I’m 42) but it’s reassuring to know that no matter where our children are born… biologically or through adoption, they all express anger in extraordinary ways. Wanting our own way, on our own terms is a universal display of emotions. My biggest struggle right now, is redirecting her slapping. Zoie shocked me when she started slapping her own face when she got super baby angry. (see Flip below-its a mild version, but you can see the change) I immediately let her know that was not OK! In fact, now when she slaps her face… I say calmly, “No hit Zoie! We give Zoie loves!” I showed her how to kiss her hands. She has been giving her hands lots of kisses and hugs. It’s working!! Now when she wants to slap her face, she ends up giving hand kisses. I think we are very close to bringing up the “time out” chair from the basement. It’s a little dusty, but the chair is still in good condition (16 years old!) We let the kids paint and decorate the chair, so it will be a special and challenging teaching tool for Princess Zoie and her Temper Tantrums. I can’t believe I actually “caught” her in the action. Enjoy my craziness.
I love learning from my bloggy readers, so any advice on taming tantrums would help this mom out.

I love Sundays! It’s a special day to reflect on my favorite things. We love to take Zoie on donut dates. She screams, shrieks, claps and simply squeals when she walks into the “do do” shop. As you enjoy Zoie Live video and take a long sniff of fresh baked donuts… embrace all the things you love today!
Keep your eyes open, hold tight to your convictions, give it all you’ve got, be resolute, and love without stopping. (1 Corinthians 16:13- Message)
Fun pics…
I’m really starting to regret the sample + 2 pumpkin spice I just ate!
There is nothing sweeter than a Zoie and donuts.

One of my highlights in Haiti was when a group of children sang my favorite song, Jesus Loves Me. Simple and Beautiful. Enjoy this video of God’s love… all over the world.
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!

The photography and stories are stunning, heartbreaking, and inspiring. In the African nation of Malawi, disease, poverty and famine have taken a horrible toll, especially on young people — in a country of twelve million people, one million are orphaned children. In 2006, pop singer Madonna began studying the crisis in Malawi, and decided to use her wealth and celebrity to help; she helped finance the construction of a home for orphans, founded a relief organization called the Raising Malawi Orphan Care Initiative, and as a personal example she and her husband adopted a boy from Malawi, David Banda Mwale, whose mother had died. Now Madonna has written and produced I Am Because We Are, a documentary about Malawi that attempts to demonstrate at the need for action by profiling eight children growing up without parents; these youngsters long for a better life and are strive to remain optimistic about the future despite the long odds fate has set against them.
I’m honored to present the November adoption video! Their crazy, amazing, miraculous adoption story featured on Not About Me top bar all month. If you have EVER wondered if adoption was something you could wrap your heart around, please take the time to watch this remarkable family’s journey to baby Abe. I had the privilege of spending the week with the Alexanders at family kamp this summer. You see what you get with this group of heroes. Their passion as a family is contagious. To learn more about adoption, as well as following their journey back to Ethiopia (they have a new son) take a peek at Team Alexander blog. Congratulations on passing court… Introducing Seth Eyasu Alexander!
Adoption has radically changed our family- for the better. The Lord first drew our hearts to the plight of the estimated 147 million orphans several years ago. I knew quickly that we had several children waiting for us in Ethiopia. I just needed Him to reveal to us where and who they were. We traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in August 2008 to pick up our son Abe and we leave next week to bring home our 3 year old son! I love the glorious picture of our adoption in Christ displayed in the physically adding children to our family. I’m grateful that the Lord opened our eyes to the call to care for the orphans in James 1:27 as our lives are richer in every way. (Emily Alexander, adoptive mom.)
Love is blind. This is the amazing story of Pandu, the 5 year old miracle boy from India. If you are interested in learning more about adoption… don’t miss this video! Their journey is captured this month in People Magazine and CBS News. I want to hear your comments.
People will adopt older kids. They’ll adopt disabled kids and neglected kids. Kids who can’t read, kids who can’t talk – there are people willing to adopt. But all those things in one child? CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman reports there are few who want that.
Born blind, Pandu was dumped at a hospital gate in India. At the orphanage, he was the one child who was there year after year, until last year. That’s when the 5-year-old got swept up by a Denver couple who said he was just what they were looking for: a little boy with his father’s eyes.
Jason Fayre teaches blind people how to be self-sufficient. So when he and his wife Lalena, who can see, decided to adopt they chose not to just give any child a home, but to give one special child a real chance – a chance he would have never had otherwise.
“I think we can offer something to a blind child that maybe a lot of other families can’t,” said Jason.
Pandu is so much better than when they got him. After 5 years in a crib with virtually no human contact, they say Pandu was almost wild. But a year later he’s in a mainstream preschool, and he’s beginning to speak for the very first time. He’s even learning the finer points of picking out a pumpkin. Of course, he chose a Braille one; like father like son. “Pandu and him have always kind of had this connection,” said Lalena.
Although it’ll be years before Pandu can fully appreciate the enormity of his good fortune, there’s no doubt he understands something pretty special is happening to him.
You don’t have to be a blind man to see that.

Zoie loves her family. We think its pretty impressive when she plays her name game. All day long she says the names of the people she loves! I think that’s why adoption is so cool… there are no limits to love. The list of Zoie’s favorites keeps growing longer and longer. Enjoy Zoie’s Flip video.
